Effortless iOS Screen Mirroring to Mac Using QuickTime Player

Chapter 1: Introduction to Screen Mirroring

Recently, I had the opportunity to present at a webinar hosted by Socket Mobile titled “How to Develop a Flutter App with Integrated Data Capture Functionality.” If you missed it and wish to catch up, the recording is available here. The session went exceptionally well, and while I felt a bit anxious presenting for the first time, it turned out to be an exhilarating experience.

During the webinar, I included a live coding segment to showcase the newly integrated CaptureSDK support for Flutter. I demonstrated the steps to install and import the pub package, as well as how to incorporate it into your Flutter application. To effectively display the app in action, it was crucial for me to mirror my iOS device’s screen onto my Mac.

You might wonder why not just use a simulator. However, the Capture service requires a physical iOS device since the Socket Mobile scanner connects via Bluetooth, necessitating a real device.

This led to the essential question: how can I project my iOS device’s screen onto my Mac? This guide will outline a straightforward method using QuickTime Player, allowing you to achieve results akin to the image below.

Chapter 2: Steps to Mirror Your iOS Device

Mirroring the iOS Screen Using QuickTime

  1. Begin by connecting your iOS device to your Mac.
  2. Open QuickTime Player and navigate to the menu bar.
  3. Click on File, then select New Movie Recording.

  1. When the QuickTime Player interface appears, click the dropdown arrow next to the record button and select your device from the list.

After selecting your device, you should see its screen mirrored within the QuickTime Player window on your Mac.

Positioning Two Windows Side by Side on Mac

Now that the iOS device is mirrored, follow these steps to arrange your QuickTime Player next to your IDE:

  1. Hover over the green expand button at the top of the screen.
  2. From the dropdown, choose Tile Window to Right of Screen.

  1. The QuickTime Player window will now occupy the right side of your screen, leaving options for what to place on the left.

And that's it! You’ve successfully mirrored your iOS device’s screen to your Mac using QuickTime Player while positioning your workspace for optimal productivity.
