The Essential Trait for Achieving Success That Everyone Overlooks

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Success

Success is a concept that varies greatly from person to person, so I won't delve into its different interpretations or share my own perspective. Instead, it’s important to acknowledge that everyone aspires to achieve their version of success. As humans, we are naturally inclined to progress and grow throughout our lives. No one wants to reach the end and reflect on a life of missed opportunities. Likewise, no one wakes up with the intention of failing. Even those in difficult situations, such as prisoners, likely don’t harbor thoughts of failure.

To achieve success in any area requires a mix of passion, determination, persistence, and resilience. While these qualities are widely recognized, there is one crucial trait that is often overlooked. You may have heard of traits such as mindset, confidence, charisma, motivation, and passion. All of these are beneficial, yet they aren't the singular trait that can truly elevate your success.

The key trait is: drumroll, please… A Strong Ego!

You might be thinking, "I’m not like Donald Trump!" But the truth is, a robust ego is essential for success in any endeavor. This does not equate to having an ego problem, which manifests as arrogance and pride. Individuals with ego issues often alienate others, making it uncomfortable to be around them. If you know someone like this, you probably do your best to limit your interactions, even if they are a close relative.

In contrast, those who possess a strong ego without the negative traits associated with it are generally pleasant companions. These individuals exude calm confidence and charm, making others naturally drawn to them. A strong ego fosters self-assurance and awareness in a way that is appealing to others, which is unfortunate considering how misunderstood the ego is.

The ego often receives negative connotations, with phrases like “drop the ego” or “it’s your ego talking” being common criticisms. Such remarks can lead to a disdain for the ego itself. I used to view the ego negatively, associating it with failure. However, thanks to the insights of the late Bob Proctor, my understanding has shifted dramatically. Without a strong ego, it’s easy to give up when challenges arise, or to conform to mediocrity year after year. A robust ego empowers you to persevere and resist the temptation to follow the crowd. Positive traits like persistence, tenacity, and passion thrive on a strong ego, which serves as their foundational support.

I’ve come to recognize my own strong ego, reflected in my abundant persistence and self-belief, while also maintaining humility and compassion for others. This balance is essential; my strong ego helps me adhere to my values and principles, guiding me in making the right choices amid life's distractions.

When someone criticizes you for having a strong ego or if you hear negative remarks about the ego, consider the points made here. Even if you disagree, it’s worth keeping an open mind. Remember, a strong ego should not be conflated with having a “big head” or being unpleasantly arrogant. Those are signs of an ego problem, which is detrimental and can destroy relationships.

Focus on cultivating a strong ego while avoiding an ego problem. Here are some strategies to help you develop a strong ego without the pitfalls of arrogance: - Build a solid self-concept based on positive attributes and values. - Cultivate the courage to pursue your aspirations. - Develop the tenacity to navigate tough situations. - Remain humble regardless of your achievements. - Show compassion to others, including fellow human beings and animals. - Empower yourself with strong values and principles. - Establish a guiding code of conduct. - Set and accomplish meaningful goals. - Foster a mindset of service, aiming to improve the world around you.

It’s time to redefine the ego as a valuable ally rather than an adversary.
