Why Every YouTuber Should Prioritize a Newsletter Now

Chapter 1: The Power of a Newsletter
In just a few hours, I will be recording and releasing my weekly newsletter for YouTubers, a task I genuinely look forward to each week. When I embarked on the journey of growing my newsletter audience last year, I quickly realized the significance of each new subscriber. I actually celebrate these individuals more than the thousands who began following me on platforms like Medium and YouTube.
While I value every viewer and reader, my newsletter audience holds a unique place in my heart and is integral to my business strategy. Currently, I have over 1,200 subscribers who actively engage with and appreciate my weekly thoughts.
If you’re an aspiring YouTuber, incorporating a newsletter into your strategy is essential—don’t delay!
How to Build a Newsletter List
You might believe that creating a newsletter list is time-consuming and less rewarding, especially when amassing YouTube subscribers seems easier. While it does require time, that’s precisely the point (I'll explain why shortly). The good news is that establishing a newsletter list is quite simple.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Ensure you have a website where you consistently post blogs (at least two weekly).
- Subscribe to a newsletter/email marketing platform (I use ConvertKit, but there are many options).
- Implement a newsletter sign-up pop-up on every webpage and in the footer.
- Include a link to your newsletter at the end of each blog post (as you can see below).
- Add a link to your newsletter in every YouTube video description.
Once these steps are in place, you can focus on creating great content while your newsletter audience grows organically.
Now that we’ve established how to cultivate a newsletter following, let’s discuss three compelling reasons why it’s crucial.
1. Your Most Valuable Audience
I’m a huge advocate of the "1,000 true fans" concept, introduced by Kevin Kelly, the founder of Wired magazine. He emphasizes that "1,000 true fans offer an alternative route to success compared to the pursuit of fame." Instead of striving for the improbable heights of blockbuster hits, you can connect directly with a thousand true fans.
As Kelly suggests, this goal is much more attainable than trying to appeal to a broader audience. These 1,000 dedicated fans will genuinely appreciate your work. For instance, I would gladly trade my 10,000 Medium followers for 1,000 individuals who read every piece I publish.
Imagine if these 1,000 true fans each paid you just £10 monthly for something valuable. That would result in an annual income of £120,000, and their loyalty would continue to strengthen.
2. A Platform for Experimentation
One of the most rewarding aspects of my weekly newsletter is its ability to allow experimentation without interference from "THE ALGORITHM." On YouTube, videos that stray from my usual tech topics often perform poorly. While I still create those videos, it can be frustrating.
In contrast, my newsletter offers creative freedom. I’ve transitioned from written content to filming weekly discussions on various topics. I’ve shared future projects, my YouTube earnings, personal milestones, and introduced my pet, Eddie.
This freedom is exhilarating, and I know a significant portion of my newsletter audience watches my videos in their entirety—a feat that’s challenging on YouTube.
3. Ownership of Your Audience
Platforms like YouTube could vanish overnight. While this seems unlikely, changes in leadership, buyouts, or unforeseen events could disrupt the platforms where you publish and grow your audience.
If that happens, your audience may disappear with it. However, your newsletter list is yours to keep. Although you’ll use a third-party service to gather email addresses, they have no rights over your list.
This ownership is vital. You build it, control it, and can utilize it as you wish, free from interference or sudden changes.
Final Thoughts: Slow Growth, Significant Impact
As mentioned earlier, building a newsletter list requires patience. For example, while I grew my 1,200+ email addresses, I also gained over 50,000 YouTube subscribers and 10,000 Medium followers.
It’s the small, consistent efforts that yield the most significant long-term results. If you haven’t read "Atomic Habits" by James Clear, I highly recommend it. Clear explains the power of compounding, which is crucial for a successful newsletter.
Initially, results may seem minimal—perhaps just one or two new subscribers weekly. However, with consistent, high-quality content, that number will grow. Before you know it, you could be gaining 1,000 new subscribers annually.
By delivering real value through engaging and authentic newsletters, you’ll cultivate trust and advocacy over time. This is where the real magic happens for you as a YouTuber.
