Exploring the Pursuit of Happiness Through Revenge

Written on

Chapter 1: The Dark Side of Revenge

What happens when you finally seize the opportunity for revenge after enduring a lifetime of torment? Can that act truly bring happiness?

This question arises from a captivating series I recently viewed on Netflix. Initially, I believed that achieving revenge would lead to happiness, especially considering the relentless bullying the protagonist faced from cruel peers and even adults in her life. Her experiences were heart-wrenching, and I found myself rooting for her vengeance.

The series titled "The Glory" is a gripping Korean drama that left me eagerly anticipating the second part of its first season. Although I doubt there will be additional seasons, I could be mistaken.

The protagonist's plight resonated with me deeply; her bullying was so severe that she contemplated dropping out of school. The environment was atrocious, and it’s unimaginable that the institution allowed such abuse to continue unchecked. Those responsible for her suffering should have faced serious consequences, yet it seemed the affluent bullies were above reproach.

I've come across discussions suggesting that the series is inspired by real-life events, although the creators haven't disclosed specific details. Some of the parallels are too striking to dismiss; real-life accounts suggest that some teachers faced repercussions, which I believe is warranted.

Is Revenge More Bitter Than Sweet? - This video explores the emotional aftermath of revenge. Can it ever lead to true happiness, or is it just a fleeting satisfaction?

I once saw an interview featuring a real-life victim who suffered severe burns due to bullying; she shared her scars on an Asian talk show. Unfortunately, I couldn't understand the dialogue, and I’ve been unable to locate the video since. She appeared visibly emotional, revealing her scars, although I’m uncertain if it was the same individual referenced in the series.

After watching the entire series, I reflected on a pivotal moment where the main character was asked if revenge would bring her happiness. It prompted me to consider my own stance. While I believe revenge might offer a sense of satisfaction, it does not equate to genuine happiness. The joy she sought after years of torment is something that can never be reclaimed.

This contemplation reminded me of a story I wrote about a man who negatively impacted my life in high school. Although his downfall provides me with some satisfaction, it hasn’t restored the happiness I lost. For those interested, my story is available here.

Chapter 2: The Complexity of Emotional Satisfaction

Overall, "The Glory" is a remarkable series that I thoroughly enjoyed, despite its heavy themes. Amidst the dark narrative, the protagonist finds love while navigating her quest for revenge. While I recognize that happiness may not stem from her actions, the satisfaction derived from confronting her tormentors, particularly her main bully, is palpable.

If this series piques your interest, I highly recommend watching it. With a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, it has been a top contender on Netflix for quite some time. I would love to hear your thoughts if you decide to watch it after reading this article.
