Exploring the Samsung Galaxy Z-Flip 4: Initial Thoughts and Insights
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction
After using the Samsung Galaxy Z-Flip 4 as my primary device for nearly two weeks, I find myself uncertain about my feelings toward it. While its compact design makes it easy to carry, I'm still trying to pinpoint the advantages of its foldable design. Perhaps it simply requires more time to uncover its potential, but at this stage, my impressions lean towards confusion. Unlike the Z-Fold 4, which transforms into a tablet and is ideal for work, the Z-Flip 4 seems to cater to a different audience altogether.
However, I must emphasize that the phone performs quite well. Transitioning from the Google Pixel 6 Pro, my overall experience has been positive. In this article, I aim to share my thoughts on the phone, especially since many are intrigued by its foldable nature. I believe my insights could be valuable to a broader audience as well.
Section 1.1: Why Choose the Z-Flip 4?
With numerous high-quality smartphones debuting recently, such as the Google Pixel 7 series, my choice of the Z-Flip 4 may raise some eyebrows. The main reason for this decision is my desire for a fresh experience. The conventional smartphone design has become stale for me, and the Z-Flip series presented an exciting alternative. While the Z-Fold 4 was appealing, it exceeded my budget.
Another key reason I opted for the Z-Flip 4 is its suitability for creating YouTube content. Its foldable feature allows for easier recording without needing to carry a tripod. Additionally, since I recently upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5, replacing my TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra, the Z-Flip 4 complements my gadget ecosystem.
Subsection 1.1.1: Unboxing and Setup
Upon unboxing, I noticed the phone came in a sleek, minimalistic box without a charging block. Included was only a USB-C cable, which felt inferior compared to the one that accompanied my Pixel 6 Pro. Fortunately, I have plenty of spare USB-C cables, so this wasn’t a significant issue; I often recommend durable braided cables like those from Anker.
Setting up the device was a breeze, thanks to Samsung's efficient switching process. Using the Smart Switch app on my Pixel 6 Pro, the transition was quick and seamless, with the phone handling most of the work.
Section 1.2: Switching eSIMs
In our current tech landscape, discussing eSIM transition is essential. My primary SIM on the Pixel 6 Pro was an eSIM provided by my network provider, EE, which offers fast data speeds in my area. The eSIM switch was surprisingly swift; I simply logged into my EE account and scanned a QR code to download the eSIM. While the process was easy for me, I recognize it might be daunting for others, particularly those who struggle with physical SIMs.
Chapter 2: Daily Use and Performance
The first video offers a glimpse into my initial experiences with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, highlighting the unique aspects of the device.
The second video provides an overview of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4's features, focusing on its practicality and design.
In terms of daily usage, the Z-Flip 4 performs admirably. Despite its smaller battery, it lasts throughout the day. I plan to share a "day in the life" review on my YouTube channel for a deeper insight into my usage patterns. Although I don’t engage in heavy gaming, I frequently use apps like Spotify, TikTok, and YouTube. During my commute, I typically watch videos and respond to emails, and I find that my battery hovers around 75% upon reaching the office, even with 5G enabled.
Overall, aside from the folding feature, the Z-Flip 4 feels like any standard Android smartphone.
What Are My Overall Thoughts?
In summary, my initial impressions of the Z-Flip 4 are generally positive. The design is appealing, although I wish a charging block had been included given the price point. Coming from the Pixel, I was also disappointed to find it still running on Android 12—an update to Android 13 would be welcomed. Furthermore, the absence of DeX support, which allows for a mobile workstation setup, is a feature I miss.
Ultimately, the Z-Flip 4 is enjoyable to use and feels solid in hand. However, I still ponder the question: what is the primary appeal of this device? While its foldable design is impressive, I find myself questioning its practical advantages. Perhaps my expectations were too high.
