Exploring the Intersection of Science and Mythology in Hanuman

Introduction to Lord Hanuman

Before delving into the subject, it's essential to understand Lord Hanuman. He is a prominent figure in Hindu mythology, featured in various scriptures, including the Mahabharata. His significant contributions are especially noted in the Ramayana, where he serves as a devoted companion to Lord Rama.

In numerous Hindu texts, Hanuman is celebrated for his heroic tales. One particularly intriguing story involves his ambitious attempt to consume the sun, which he mistook for a fruit—an astronomical distance of about 148 million kilometers from Earth. As he soared through space towards the sun, he transformed into a colossal form known as "bhimrupi" to accomplish his goal. When Indra, the king of the gods, learned of Hanuman's intentions, he struck Hanuman's jaw with his thunderbolt, leading to the name "Hanuman," which means "the one with a disfigured jaw." Enraged, Vayu, the wind god, compelled Indra to seek forgiveness for his actions.

The revered Hindu poet Tulsidas composed the Hanuman Chalisa, which extols Hanuman's courage and devotion to Lord Rama. In this text, Tulsidas references terms such as "Yug" (12,000 years), "Sahasra" (1,000 years), and "Yojan" (approximately 8 miles). Some interpretations suggest that multiplying these figures approximates the distance from the Earth to the Sun, estimated at 154 million kilometers. While this theory lacks concrete evidence, it certainly prompts contemplation about historical cosmic events.

In the Chalisa, Tulsidas further describes Hanuman's ability to transition between "sukshmaroop" (small form) and "bhimroop" (giant form). This raises several intriguing questions:

  1. Did Hanuman's journey through the solar system disrupt planetary orbits?
  2. How could Hanuman instantaneously alter his size?

Understanding Hanuman's Journey

Albert Einstein characterized gravity as a curvature in space around massive objects like stars and planets. Thus, if Hanuman traversed towards the sun in his giant form, it's conceivable that he might have influenced the orbits of nearby planets.

Hindu epics, particularly the Ramayana, depict Hanuman's remarkable ability to change his physical size. He engaged in combat against demons, showcasing his renowned bravery and strength.

According to the law of conservation of mass, mass within an isolated system is neither created nor destroyed through chemical reactions or physical transformations. The principle of mass-energy equivalence, as outlined by Einstein’s E=mc², suggests a relationship between mass and energy. This leads to a possible explanation for Hanuman's extraordinary transformations: it may be that he harnessed the sun's vast energy, allowing him to enlarge without actually creating mass. Hence, there would be no reason for planetary orbits to be affected.

While the existence of Hanuman may be met with skepticism, dismissing his story would disrupt the narrative of mythological events recorded in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The absence of concrete evidence invites speculation, and it is often through miscommunication that tales evolve over time, obscuring the original narrative.

In my view, these legendary accounts serve as allegorical representations of scientific phenomena, evolving through the ages into the stories we recognize today. Instead of hastily judging based on limited evidence, let us take a moment to appreciate our robust health and seek strength from Lord Hanuman.
