The Journey Beyond the Cherry Blossom: Embracing Life's Phases

Chapter 1: The Marathon of Life
Life is not merely a fleeting moment of beauty.
One day, I came across a post in a Toastmasters Facebook group where a new member proudly announced that he had achieved his first Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) title after two years. The DTM title recognizes exceptional members for their contributions to the community. While I’m unsure of the average time it takes to earn a DTM, I’ve noticed that many members often achieve their first title after around ten years of dedication. Having been involved with Toastmasters for four years now, I feel a strong commitment but don’t anticipate earning my first DTM title for another three or four years.
To qualify for the DTM, one must complete two educational programs known as Pathways paths, each consisting of at least 14 projects that culminate in public speaking. Some projects can take months to finish and involve leadership tasks. An exceptionally dedicated member might complete one project in a month and finish the two required paths in two years. Additionally, members must earn various credits through leadership roles, which also demand a significant investment of time and skill.
Achieving a DTM title is truly a marathon, not a sprint.
In the comments section of the Facebook post, most responses were filled with encouragement and admiration. However, one stood out: “Toastmasters is a marathon, not a one-time blossom…”. This phrase struck a chord with me, evoking thoughts of the cherry blossoms in Japan.
During my work in Asia, I often visited Japan, where cherry blossoms, known as “Sakura,” capture the hearts of many. I once traveled to Tokyo in early spring and was surrounded by a stunning sea of pink petals, the sweet fragrance of Sakura, and enthusiastic admirers from around the globe. When I spoke with a Japanese business partner about this obsession, he shared,
“We all cherish Sakura. It pours all its energy into a brief two-week bloom, then vanishes into the earth, leaving no trace. Our ancestors awaited its arrival with anticipation, mourned its departure, and lamented its fleeting beauty. They aimed to appreciate that temporary magnificence, striving for a life that mirrors a one-time blossom.”
He paused briefly before continuing, “But is this the essence of life? Life isn’t a race against time; it’s about exploring endless possibilities. The Sakura mentality can be toxic, especially for younger generations who might sacrifice everything for transient pleasure. We strive to help them understand that life isn’t about condensing all their energy into a single moment. Instead, it’s like a river—ever-flowing, turning, and evolving, never ceasing.”
Returning to the Facebook post, I am grateful to see the member's excitement met with overwhelming support. I hope he encounters some DTM achievers along his journey, as it would help him realize that DTM is not the ultimate goal. I consider myself fortunate to have started my Toastmasters journey alongside individuals who have dedicated over four decades and earned multiple DTM titles. They approach their projects with the enthusiasm of newcomers and serve the community as if it were family. What inspires me most isn’t the DTM plaques displayed in their homes but their enduring passion over the years.
One evening, while picking up my neighbors Pamela and Rich from LAX, the night had fallen as we drove toward the freeway. Suddenly, Pamela exclaimed, “Look at the moon. It’s stunning!” I glanced up, initially seeing nothing, and asked, “What moon?” She pointed towards the horizon, urging me to look again. Then I noticed it—a delicate crescent moon, barely visible against the twilight. It was the most beautiful moon I had ever seen.
When we focus solely on the resplendent full moon, we may overlook the subtle beauty of the softer smiles in the sky.
Life transcends being a fleeting moment of beauty; every stage offers its own radiance.
Chapter 2: The Toxic Nature of Cherry Blossom Culture
In our exploration of the Sakura phenomenon, it’s essential to consider its impact on our perspectives.
This video, "The TOXICITY of Canon SasuSaku | A Timestamped Analysis Essay," delves into how the fixation on fleeting moments can distort our understanding of relationships and life itself.
Chapter 3: Understanding Relationship Dynamics
The complex relationship between Sakura and Sasuke can serve as a metaphor for deeper emotional connections.
