Chapter 1: The Rise of AI Legislation
On a bright morning, it became clear that technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace, challenging us even from an ethical perspective. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming business operations and interactions globally. Its expanding influence across various industries, including manufacturing, marketing, and logistics, necessitates that organizations learn to implement AI responsibly to remain competitive. In light of this, the Polytechnic University of Milan has released a study titled "Responsible Artificial Intelligence," which reflects on the risks and responsibilities associated with this technology.
This research builds on an analysis from Stanford University, which, in its annual AI report, highlights the surge in legislative proposals concerning AI.
The Significance of Responsible AI
AI applications like ChatGPT are just the beginning of the myriad ways AI is utilized today, often without our full awareness. From self-driving cars to tailored virtual assistants, AI systems have demonstrated extraordinary potential to boost productivity, streamline processes, and unlock new opportunities. However, as this technology becomes more prevalent, there is an increasing recognition of the importance of using it responsibly. As the adage goes, with significant power comes significant responsibility.
The study articulates, "The ethical development of AI is not merely a moral responsibility but also a strategic necessity for organizations." This concern should not be overlooked, as the document notes that irresponsible practices can severely damage a company's reputation, leading to far-reaching implications. By proactively addressing transparency, fairness, reliability, and accountability, organizations can foster trust among their employees, clients, and business partners, enhancing the overall perception of AI technologies while safeguarding themselves against legal and regulatory challenges.
Robotic Legislators in Governance
The paper places a strong focus on the need for regulation, as governments globally are striving to manage the growing challenges posed by unregulated AI development. An examination of the AI Index reveals that the number of legislative documents regarding AI has increased significantly, from just one in 2016 to eighteen in 2021 across 25 countries. Notably, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States each passed three AI-related bills in 2021.
Federal legislative records in the U.S. indicate a substantial rise in AI-related bills between 2015 and 2021, although only 2% of these bills have ultimately become law. In 2021, state legislators enacted one law from 50 proposed bills containing AI provisions, reflecting an increase from just two in 2012 to 131 in 2021.
Meanwhile, Europe is deliberating over the AI Act, which aims to create the first globally harmonized regulatory framework, while China has implemented strict guidelines for generative AI.

Chapter 2: Ethical Considerations in AI
The need for heightened awareness surrounding AI is underscored by the projections from Stanford University's AI Index Report, which illustrates the swift integration of AI into businesses. Therefore, a primary ethical challenge lies in fostering AI acceptance among employees and corporate collaborators through targeted training initiatives. Numerous universities are already making strides in this area. Interestingly, citizens in Western countries tend to view AI less favorably compared to their Chinese counterparts.
This necessity is a crucial priority, and I am devoted to channeling my full informational efforts toward it. I am eager to engage in the ongoing conversation about AI awareness and responsible implementation. This cause is close to my heart, and I believe that by continuously educating myself and disseminating valuable insights, I can help cultivate a more informed and ethically aware approach to artificial intelligence for both individuals and organizations.
I sincerely hope that any delays encountered do not result in unforeseen obstacles or aimless diversions. My wish is for AI to serve as a support system for individuals and humanity as a whole.
