Your Spiritual Path Can Be Simple: Embrace Small Steps

Chapter 1: Understanding Simplicity in Spirituality

Your spiritual journey doesn’t have to be challenging. In fact, breaking it down into manageable pieces can lead to significant progress over time.

Consider this: What is one minus one? Two minus two? The answer is zero. Now, what about identity minus identity? Logically, that should also equal zero, but spiritually, it signifies wholeness. Osho beautifully articulates this, stating, "When the drop merges into the ocean, it becomes the ocean. When you dissolve into the whole, you embody the whole." These words are captivating, but imagine experiencing this profound truth yourself.

Often, we complicate spirituality unnecessarily. I once received a message from someone who said, "I feel lost in the complexities of life, especially when it comes to spirituality. Your straightforward approach helps me regain my footing." This highlights our tendency to overthink.

Spirituality, at its core, is inherently simple. Yet, it’s often tangled in layers of complexity. If simplicity reigns, the ego struggles to take pride in it. After all, few people boast about homegrown tomatoes as much as they do about a luxury car parked in their driveway. Society often equates value with noise and challenge. Enlightenment has become a coveted goal, largely because of its rarity and allure. However, true enlightenment requires shedding layers to embrace life’s simplicity and innocence.

Life, in its essence, is remarkably uncomplicated. The act of breathing is a miracle; a genuine smile can brighten someone’s day. Spirituality is fundamentally about existence.

Intellectual comprehension often falls short. Practical engagement is key. Overstimulation can hinder your ability to rest. Just being in your own presence is the easiest yet sometimes most challenging endeavor. Why? Because external distractions can pull you away from your true self, turning you into mere reactions to the stimuli around you.

Feelings like agitation, sorrow, anxiety, and stress can cloud your journey. Does this mean abandoning all forms of stimulation? While it's feasible to limit certain distractions, complete withdrawal isn't necessary. You can reduce excessive screen time, ignore fear-inducing news, and step away from draining relationships or situations.

Prioritizing your energy can lighten the load of modern life's demands. However, a significant portion of stimulation also arises from within—fears and anxieties that originate from your inner landscape. Navigating this internal landscape step by step is what defines a spiritual journey.

Your time is precious; you must determine how to spend it. Ask any enlightened person about enlightenment, and they will likely tell you it involves looking inward. Ancient Indian philosophy describes this as 'Antarmukhi,' which translates to turning one’s attention inward.

A genuine seeker dedicates time to self-reflection, which is why meditation plays such a vital role in self-discovery. Setting aside moments simply to exist—without distraction—is crucial. External distractions will always try to redirect your focus, but daily meditation can help you find your center.

At first, meditation might seem daunting. It can be challenging to sit quietly when your mind is racing with distractions. However, there's a way to simplify the process—by taking small, daily steps.

Many people lament their difficult lives, yet only a fraction actively seeks change. So many wait for their circumstances to improve or cast blame on others, opting for distraction instead. This approach isn't inherently wrong, but inaction will not lead to transformation.

Recently, I reconnected with a seeker I had previously advised to undertake a simple daily practice. During our latest conversation, she again expressed uncertainty and a desire for direction. When I inquired about her progress with the exercises I suggested, she admitted she hadn’t attempted them at all. Excuses flooded in, but there is no right or wrong here—it's your life.

Without commitment, nothing will shift. If you’ve grown accustomed to blaming others, you’ll struggle to take responsibility. If you're comfortable in your discomfort, you won’t make the effort to change. No one can alter your life for you; that power lies within you.

If you seek transformation, you must take charge of your journey. Waiting for a magical moment to resolve everything will leave you in perpetual limbo.

Be the Hero of Your Own Story

This doesn’t mean you have to undertake monumental feats. It’s about embracing self-responsibility. When you accept this, no obstacle can prevent you from taking gradual steps forward.

Spirituality may appear as an overwhelming mountain to climb, but it doesn't have to feel that way. Every mountain is traversed one step at a time; every river crossed with a single stroke.

You don’t need to rush or feel burdened by future expectations. Instead, incorporate small actions into your routine. For instance, meditation doesn’t need to be lengthy; even five or ten minutes daily can be transformative.

Initially, prioritize consistency over intensity. With time, you can gradually extend your sessions. There's no obligation to achieve everything at once. Sometimes, small, purposeful actions are all you need.

Make your journey straightforward. The goal of spirituality isn't to fixate on the destination but to engage in daily practices that lead to deeper self-awareness.

Wishing and hoping will not lead to change—actions will. Commit to taking small steps, embrace responsibility for your entire self, and focus on consistency first; intensity can follow.
