Get Ready, iPhone Users: USB-C Is On Its Way!

The Transition from Lightning to USB-C
You read that correctly! iPhone users, brace yourselves for the arrival of the 2023 iPhone models, as it appears Apple is finally phasing out the Lightning connector.
The Shift is Official
The European Union has mandated that all future smartphones and electronic devices must incorporate USB-C ports, with a deadline set for autumn 2024. This decision has been confirmed, requiring all mobile phones and tablets to adopt USB-C as their standard charging method.
Apple's Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak, acknowledged this change when responding to a question from Joanna Stern of The Wall Street Journal regarding the replacement of the Lightning port. Joswiak candidly stated, "Obviously, we’ll have to comply; we have no choice."
Will All iPhones Get USB-C?
Given that this directive originates from the European Union, one might wonder if Apple will implement USB-C across all iPhone models or limit it to those sold in Europe. Personally, I believe that all iPhones will adopt USB-C. However, it's worth noting that only the U.S. versions of the iPhone 14 currently use eSIM technology.
Nonetheless, Apple has expressed its dissatisfaction with this mandate, arguing that the transition to USB-C could contribute to increased electronic waste. While I currently use USB-C for all my devices except for my iPhone, I find the concern over e-waste somewhat unconvincing.
Looking Ahead: The Future of iPhone Design
Ultimately, Apple aims to introduce a completely portless iPhone in the future. Personally, I rely on wireless charging for my iPhone 14 Pro Max and rarely use the Lightning port, so I would be comfortable with a portless design. However, it's important to recognize that not all users utilize wireless charging.
Regardless of Apple's final decision, one thing is certain: USB-C is making its debut in the upcoming iPhone 15.
