Why My Boss Let Go of a Programmer: Three Unusual Reasons
Written on
Understanding the Termination
Recently, my boss made the tough decision to terminate a programmer from our team who was known for his exceptional problem-solving skills. However, things had taken a turn for the worse.
As I embarked on my programming journey, I was drawn to the IT industry for several compelling reasons, including job stability. Witnessing my boss let an employee go left me feeling uneasy. The programmer was given 30 days to secure new employment and exit the company.
The termination stemmed from three key factors. I believe the decision was influenced by a combination of these reasons.
A Slow Worker
The programmer in question struggled with completing tasks in a timely manner. Despite receiving multiple warnings from my boss, he continued to lag behind. I often inquired about his slow pace, and he responded by expressing frustration over working quickly for a company that offered minimal recognition. While this wasn't the sole reason for his dismissal, it certainly tarnished his reputation among teammates who were striving to meet project deadlines.
Lack of Interest in Learning
At one point, our boss informed us that a new project would require additional skills, such as blockchain technology, and encouraged us to learn them promptly. The terminated employee, however, showed no interest in acquiring new skills. He found the prospect of learning tedious and insisted he had ample knowledge to contribute to other aspects of the project. My boss issued a warning, which he promptly disregarded. His demeanor suggested he believed he had more authority than warranted, especially given his limited experience of under four years.
A Reckless Attitude Towards Company Resources
Our company has a robust allowance system designed to support project-related expenses. I vividly recall the day my boss confronted the employee about misusing allowances for personal matters, such as dining at an upscale restaurant with a partner. When questioned, the employee nonchalantly claimed that he felt entitled to use the allowance for personal expenses, arguing that if it were wrong, the company wouldn't have provided it in the first place. This blatant disregard for company ethics prompted my boss to issue an ultimatum: "Promise me this won't happen again, and I won't terminate your employment."
The employee's response was telling: "I can’t guarantee it; it could happen again."
This was the final straw. My boss decided to let him go, granting him a month to find a new job.
After the 30-day notice period, the dismissed employee secured a position at a competing firm. I remain puzzled as to why someone would behave as if they owned the company they work for. Every employee's contribution is vital to a company's success, and it's essential to value every role within the organization. I hope this account provides valuable insights.
