Apple Should Really Consider This: A Folding Phone Future?
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to Folding Phones
Recently, I was fortunate enough to receive a Galaxy Z Fold4 from Samsung for an extended review period of three months. Although I’m somewhat late to the game (the Fold4 debuted in August of the previous year), I’m excited to share my thoughts.
While I’ve previously expressed skepticism about folding smartphones, particularly regarding the likelihood of an iPhone adopting this design anytime soon, my experience with the Fold4 has been nothing short of revelatory. I can confidently say that I am genuinely enamored with this device and dread the day I have to return it.
Section 1.1: My Hesitation and the Cost of Folding Phones
In the past, I struggled to get review units from Samsung, often having to purchase devices outright, which can be quite a financial burden. The Galaxy Z Fold4 starts at £1,649 for the 256GB model and jumps to a staggering £2,019 for the 1TB variant. This hefty price tag made it hard for me to justify investing in such a device.
Section 1.2: Surprising Discoveries
Looking back, I realize I should have jumped on the opportunity to get the Fold4 sooner. Those who showcased the device on platforms like YouTube enjoyed remarkable engagement, and I’ve already witnessed the potential firsthand. A quick, informal video I posted on TikTok recently amassed over 460,000 views, illustrating the public's fascination with folding technology.
The first video showcases various ways to enhance your Apple experience, with a focus on the transformative potential of modern devices.
Chapter 2: Features That Stand Out
There are numerous aspects of the Galaxy Z Fold4 that I find impressive. The expansive display is a game-changer, providing a unique experience that neither a tablet nor a traditional smartphone can offer. Reading through the Kindle app has been delightful, and the multitasking capabilities have exceeded my expectations.
Section 2.1: User Experience and Performance
The device runs smoothly, boasts an excellent camera, and its facial recognition is comparable to Face ID. The battery life is commendable, and it’s surprisingly more pocket-friendly than my iPhone 14 Pro Max. There’s an undeniable satisfaction in folding the phone shut after completing a task, and aesthetically, it’s quite appealing.
Section 2.2: Drawbacks of the Fold4
However, the Z Fold4 isn’t without its flaws. The crease in the display is impossible to ignore, and my review unit creaks when opened, possibly due to prior usage. Additionally, the narrower front screen can be cumbersome for typing, and some apps, like Instagram, don’t fully utilize the larger display.
The second video provides an in-depth review of Apple's Journal app, examining its features and how it compares to popular alternatives.
Chapter 3: The Future of Folding Phones
Will Apple ever release a folding iPhone? It seems unlikely in the near future. The challenges and compromises associated with a device like the Z Fold4 may deter Apple from pursuing this technology. While they may be testing various concepts, a consumer-ready folding iPhone feels far off.
Section 3.1: Final Thoughts and Future Plans
The Z Fold4 is indeed a unique device that straddles the line between smartphone and tablet, offering a fun and engaging user experience. However, its high price and niche appeal may limit its market reach.
I understand I might be experiencing a temporary excitement for the Z Fold4, which is why I look forward to using it for a more extended period. After my three months are up, I’ll share my comprehensive thoughts both here and on YouTube. Stay tuned for what promises to be an intriguing journey!
