Discovering Your Genuine Passions: A Practical Guide
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Passion
While playfully engaging in a mock kick with my younger brother, who humorously remarks, “Muay Thai has driven you a bit crazy!”, I can’t help but laugh along. I’ve lost track of time in the gym, obsessively hitting the heavy bag, kicking at random leaves, and even dreaming about training sessions.
Amidst this playful banter, a moment of clarity strikes me. The phrase “Follow your passion!” is ubiquitous online, yet few offer guidance on how to uncover these passions or recognize when you've found them. Luckily, there's a surprisingly straightforward method.
What Constitutes a True Passion? As Socrates wisely noted, “The beginning of wisdom is the definition of terms.”
You know you have a passion when you feel an innate drive to engage in it — a profound internal desire that propels you, rather than external incentives. It’s about doing it for its own sake — not for financial gain, recognition, or to impress others. The results, while often positive, are secondary because the activity itself is the true reward.
The Two Essential Questions to Discover Your Passions Take a step back and evaluate your daily activities through these two lenses:
- Is this something I want to do when I have no other motivation?
- Does it require effort?
The first question can be misleading; for instance, unhealthy habits like excessive gaming or drinking might also qualify. That’s where the “effort check” comes in—if an activity demands hard work and you still yearn to participate, that’s a sign of intrinsic motivation.
One Crucial Question to Validate Your Top Passions The clearest indicator of intrinsic motivation? You don’t seek outside validation.
So ask yourself, “Would I engage in this even if no one else could see or acknowledge it?”
Whether it’s exercising alone in an empty gym, writing beautiful poetry in your private journal, or playing soothing melodies on the piano, you’re performing for just one audience—yourself.
That, my friend, is a genuine passion. While your job may pay the bills and provide material benefits, it’s your passion that nurtures your spirit. Hold onto it fiercely.
