Embrace Imperfection: Your Path to Starting a Business
Written on
Chapter 1: The Trap of Naive Perfectionism
Many aspiring entrepreneurs find themselves trapped in a cycle of overthinking. They might say, "I want to launch a business; it doesn't need to be huge, just enough to leave my job. It should fit my specific niche and align with my passions to keep me engaged. But first, I need funding, followed by a flawless business plan. I must create all the social media accounts and devise an effective marketing strategy."
Or perhaps they think, "I want to leave my current job because it doesn’t resonate with my personality or passions. I’m looking for an overseas position to earn more and gain experience. However, I need to build a strong portfolio and resume while saving for relocation. The job must also align with my interests and offer a good work-life balance without excessive stress. Unfortunately, I’m in significant debt, so I feel stuck at my current job while trying to start a business."
This leads to a common problem: the desire for perfection can result in endless procrastination.
> I refer to this as Naive Perfectionism.
Section 1.1: Understanding Naive Perfectionism
I used to have a strong aversion to the term "naive." Many people toss it around casually, often with a condescending tone, saying things like, "Look at him, so young and naive!" But what does "naive" really mean? It often feels dismissive, used to belittle those who are hopeful, as if the speaker is somehow superior. However, I came to realize that when used properly, the term can express a genuine concern for someone’s wellbeing, a reflection of love and caution.
Over time, I've recognized that my naive thinking leads me to believe everything must unfold flawlessly. I envisioned a straight path to success, where every step was predictable and in order—an approach that only fueled my procrastination.
Section 1.2: Breaking Free from Perfectionism
Instead of viewing the journey as a linear path, we should see it as a winding, unpredictable road. The key is to take action, letting go of the need for a perfect plan. Progress doesn’t require symmetry or a defined sequence; sometimes, it’s the imperfect steps that lead to the best outcomes.
So, don’t waste your time waiting for everything to be just right. Shift your focus to taking actionable steps that are manageable.
JUST DO IT!
Engage with people, build connections, and seek assistance. Surround yourself with positivity and remember: everything can be perceived as good if you choose to see it that way.
Being naive isn’t a flaw; just avoid overthinking.
