Understanding whether we inhabit a simulation holds significant importance. It influences our purpose, ambitions, and beliefs, which in turn shape our perceptions. How we perceive the world informs our thoughts, language, choices in fashion, dietary preferences, and even the relationships we nurture. Our experiences mirror the reality we choose to acknowledge.

This search for transcendence is why we aspire to reach Mars, extend human lifespans beyond a century, explore psychedelics, and practice meditation. We yearn for experiences that surpass the ordinary, constantly striving for enhancement.

As we evolve, our understanding of reality transforms. Historically, humanity has often been mistaken. Our views have shifted from believing the Earth is flat and that the sun orbits it, to recognizing the equality of all genders and races, and understanding the structure of atoms. It has taken immense effort and numerous setbacks to advance our knowledge, and many of our current core beliefs may eventually be proven inaccurate.

Among these beliefs is the nature of our own existence and the purpose we serve in the universe. Scientists are exploring three primary theories to explain reality:

  1. The Big Bang Theory: This suggests everything originated from a singular point of immense energy, with human existence being a part of this narrative, although evidence to support it is lacking.
  2. Simulation Hypothesis: This posits that our reality, including Earth and the universe, is a form of artificial simulation, much like a computer program. Some algorithms suggest the likelihood that we are indeed living in such a simulated environment is significantly high.
  3. Conscious Intervention: This theory proposes that past alterations to DNA by external agents granted us and other life forms certain abilities.

Now, let's delve deeper into the simulation hypothesis.

All simulations share three characteristics: they have defined beginnings and endings, they operate under specific rules, and they offer a means for the player to seek guidance from outside the simulation, as noted by Computer Geologist Gregg Braden. Simulations are designed to facilitate learning within a controlled environment, preparing us for future challenges.

Cognitive Psychologist Donald Hoffman asserts that our perception of reality is inherently flawed. He argues that our understanding of the truth is practically nonexistent. Our perception is influenced by survival instincts; thus, what we perceive as reality is tailored to our survival needs. Different organisms experience reality through unique interfaces. For example, dogs can detect impending seizures, while certain snakes and insects perceive infrared light, and birds can sense magnetic fields.

Their distinct perceptions serve their survival, leading to varied interpretations of the same reality. A lion and a cow, for instance, view a T-bone steak through entirely different lenses.

Perception does not equate to truth; it merely reflects our survival incentives, often obscuring the objective reality. When we communicate via smartphones, we perceive a simple interface of letters and colors, while the underlying reality consists of complex interactions involving electrical charges and brain synapses—elements we can't directly perceive.

Our devices are structured to conceal the underlying truth to enhance our experiential outcomes. Our brains act as a filter through which we interpret reality, constructing a virtual experience. The concepts of space and time may not be as fundamental as we think.

Modern science is constrained by three prevailing theories: Einstein's relativity, quantum mechanics, and natural selection. These frameworks can limit our capacity to experience reality objectively, according to Hoffman.

For example, the term "mass" varies significantly across Newtonian physics, Einstein's theories, and quantum mechanics, complicating our understanding of objects and experiences within space-time.

Evolution hasn't endowed us with the ability to perceive the truth; rather, it hints that truth exists beyond our grasp. We only engage with the “headset” that shapes our sensory experiences. To broaden our understanding of reality, we must seek conscious experiences that transcend our usual perceptions.

A conscious experience free from the constraints of our "headset" represents a state of pure awareness, surpassing emotions and individual identities. Practices like meditation and psychedelics aim to facilitate these experiences, prompting the question: Is escaping our headset the ultimate objective of residing within a simulation?

If so, then our life's purpose revolves around exploration and improvement. To achieve this, we must relinquish rigid dogmas and beliefs, enabling us to entertain new possibilities.

This openness allows mathematics to guide us closer to the truth—the underlying code of existence—rather than adhering to outdated doctrines.

How can we approach this source code? By forging connections with other conscious beings, we can create more expansive conscious experiences. The interaction between two conscious agents gives rise to a third entity—the relationship itself.

Perhaps reality is far more complex than we can fathom, and understanding the whole requires integrating diverse perspectives. By empathizing and sharing experiences, we may glimpse a more complete understanding of existence.

Exploring reality through conscious connections can lead us to profound transformations, akin to a caterpillar's metamorphosis into a butterfly. Caterpillars dissolve into a gelatinous state within their cocoons before re-emerging as butterflies, symbolizing the extraordinary changes that can occur.
