Learning French Affordably: My 2024 Language Journey

Written on

Chapter 1: My Language Learning Blueprint

In this section, I outline my straightforward yet effective approach to mastering French without breaking the bank.

A less detailed version of my plan includes:

  • Listening to French music and memorizing lyrics
  • Engaging with YouTube content both passively and actively
  • Enrolling in online classes while offering English tutoring on the side

Reflecting on my past attempts, last year I shared my ambitious goal of becoming fluent in Japanese by the end of 2022. Like many resolutions, it quickly fell apart. However, this year, I’m determined to succeed! My new motivation? I’m writing my debut album and aspire to collaborate with a French artist. The allure of romance languages in music is simply irresistible!

Here’s my comprehensive strategy to learn French economically over the next year:

Section 1.1: Getting Started with Music

To kick off my journey, I’ll immerse myself in French music. Stephen Krashen revolutionized language acquisition by emphasizing the importance of immersion over rote memorization. Listening to French songs is a fantastic way to dive into the language. You can start by exploring playlists on Spotify or similar platforms. I was fortunate to receive some music recommendations from a friend who is also on this learning path.

For those interested, I’ve curated an “en français” playlist you can check out. French pop is particularly engaging, with catchy lyrics that help enhance vocabulary and highlight the nuances of pronunciation.

Section 1.2: Elevating My Learning with YouTube

Listening is crucial when learning a new language, so I’ve been actively watching various YouTube channels to pick up fundamental vocabulary and get a grasp on simple conversations.

One channel I highly recommend is FrenchPod101, which offers live streams that serve as a background resource for daily language exposure. For conversational skills and grammar tips, check out Français avec Nelly, where videos come complete with subtitles—though I try to challenge myself by not relying on them too much. Inner French provides a broader scope by discussing topics from pop culture to French history, allowing for vocabulary expansion beyond everyday conversations.

I aim to dedicate an hour or more each evening to my French studies. Reflecting on my college experience, where I attended German classes for an hour daily, I realize that consistency is key to effective language learning.

Chapter 2: Formal Learning Options

This video discusses the best free resources available for learning French online, including study plans and tips for self-study.

For a more structured learning environment, I’m exploring paid online classes. Interacting with a native speaker can significantly accelerate the fluency process, which is essential for my goal of writing and singing in French.

Some online platforms I’m considering include:

  • Lingoda: Offers flexible class packages based on your proficiency level, ranging from casual to intensive courses.
  • Babbel: Provides well-structured courses that focus on various aspects of language learning, from vocabulary to grammar.
  • FluentU: Features natural French media, complete with interactive captions and quizzes, allowing for a more engaging learning experience.

Section 2.1: Language Exchange Programs

To offset the costs associated with these resources, I’m also looking into tutoring and teaching English online. Cambly offers an opportunity to tutor English learners worldwide without needing a degree or TEFL certification.

I recognize that my flexibility as an online worker gives me an advantage, but anyone serious about mastering a language must commit the necessary time to study and practice. By tutoring English while learning French, I hope to balance expenses while gaining invaluable teaching experience.

In conclusion, I hope my journey and resources inspire others learning French this year. If you’re on this path, I’d love to hear from you in the comments!
