Mastering Your Mind: A Practical 3-Step Approach to Overcome Negativity
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding the Monkey Mind
Your mind can sometimes feel like an uncontrollable force, often referred to as the "monkey mind." This term, popularized by thinkers and spiritual leaders, describes the restless nature of our thoughts. Unless you learn to tame this chaotic thinking, it could take over your life and drain your energy.
The human brain is an extraordinary entity that processes a staggering number of thoughts—between 70,000 and 100,000 daily. Surprisingly, most of these thoughts are repetitive, appearing in various forms. An untrained mind can easily become overwhelmed by this barrage of thoughts, leading to a cycle of negativity. The time has come to break this cycle by learning a straightforward 3-step method designed to help you identify and transform your negative thoughts.
Many wise individuals across history, particularly from Eastern philosophies, have explored this phenomenon. Buddha famously characterized this uncontrolled thought process as the "monkey mind."
How does this chaotic thinking manifest? Imagine you are pondering your child's upcoming graduation. Your mind races from worry about her outfit to nostalgic reflections on your own graduation, triggering feelings of pride and happiness. Before you know it, you're spiraling into anxieties about your current work environment and past experiences that evoke anger and regret. In mere moments, your thoughts can lead you down a rabbit hole of emotional turmoil.
This mental chatter can be relentless, often making you lose focus on your current activities—like driving without recalling the journey. Recognizing the power of the mind is essential; it can propel you forward or divert you from your path.
So, how do we regain control over our thoughts and change our negative patterns? The world we live in is undoubtedly filled with unpredictability, often labeled a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) environment.
Section 1.1: Step 1 – Acknowledge the Monkey Mind
The journey begins with RECOGNITION. Acknowledge when your monkey mind has taken the reins. This involves catching yourself in the act of spiraling into negative thinking. Commit to this battle with awareness and determination, as the mind is adept at finding distractions.
Section 1.2: Step 2 – Stop the Negative Thought Cycle
The second step is to STOP the flow of uncontrolled thoughts. Close your eyes and direct your gaze upward, focusing on a point between your eyebrows. This simple adjustment can help shift your brain from a Beta to an Alpha state—where creativity and openness thrive.
Take a deep breath, imagining it as a cleansing process for your mind. Visualize your negative thoughts being swept away like dust. Picture inhaling pure white light and exhaling darkness, allowing negativity to dissipate.
If your mind is resistant, don’t give up. Remember, like a wild horse, your mind will eventually learn to respond to your guidance.
Subsection 1.2.1: Step 3 – Replace Negativity with Positivity
The final step involves REPLACING negative thoughts with positive affirmations. While your eyes remain closed, declare "CANCELLED, CANCELLED, CANCELLED" to halt the negative thought process. Visualize this as if you are a superhero stopping a runaway train.
Now, replace the negative thought with a positive affirmation in the present tense. For instance, if you find yourself thinking you don’t deserve a desired item, affirm: "I now choose to believe that I deserve this beautiful dress."
This technique may seem simple, but consistency is key. With practice, you can train your mind to listen to you rather than the other way around.
Remember, practicing this technique once isn’t enough for lasting change. You must commit to it. Your mind will challenge you, but persistence is essential. As the wise Master Yoda said, "There is no try. Just do it." Stay focused on doing what is right for your mental well-being.
