Maximizing Engagement: Lessons from Twitter Threads

Chapter 1: Understanding the Power of Engagement
Twitter has taught me invaluable lessons about capturing attention.
My fingers can swiftly scroll through countless posts on my feed, while my eyes search for vibrant colors, impactful words, and distinctive layouts. When something catches my attention, my scrolling halts, and I dive in to read further. The same principles can be applied in various contexts.
For example, Nathan Baugh highlighted a striking fact: "Top Gun made $357 million at the box office, but its most significant impact was a 500% increase in Navy recruitment. Here’s an analysis."
Section 1.1: Features vs. Benefits
Features alone are often unexciting, appealing primarily to competitors. The traditional benefits approach has become stale. What truly resonates with today’s consumers? Authentic storytelling and establishing credibility through association.
A compelling, concise statement about what you offer can ignite interest. Take Navy SEALs, for instance; they may not care about recruitment numbers, but they certainly appreciate a film featuring Tom Cruise.
Not every brand can emulate Apple’s marketing strategies. Consider this example:
- Feature: 16 or 32 GB storage
- Benefit: A music library for every mood
- Micro-copy: 1,000 songs in your pocket
When entering a saturated market, finding a unique angle can be challenging. One effective strategy is to leverage what people already adore. For example:
- "This smells like Kim Kardashian's orgasm." — Goop
- "From the creators of Grey's Anatomy comes Scandal." — Shonda Rhimes
- "Jennifer Aniston ate this salad every day on Friends." — bloggers
As Sahil wisely stated, "You aren't ugly. It's the market."
Section 1.2: Embracing Emotion and Authenticity
New entrants often lack the budget for top-tier copywriters and have limited time to master compelling marketing techniques. However, what you do possess is passion and emotional drive to promote your brand.
If most marketers act as aggressive salespeople, consider being the empathetic outsider who stands out. Gary Vaynerchuk may not be flawless, but he emphasizes kindness and empathy, a path few have ventured down. Most coaches focus on crafting eloquent messages, while Tim Ferriss has written over 5,000 blogs but still outsources his copywriting.
Crafting compelling copy is challenging, particularly when trying to convey emotion in videos or empty rooms. Yet, emotion comes naturally and quickly, allowing you to connect with your audience until you can hire skilled writers.
Section 1.3: Integrating into Lifestyles
"Sleep for 8 hours, not 6. Exercise for 1 hour, not 4. Deep work for 4 hours, not 12. You’re a human, not a machine." — Will Goto
To engage effectively, integrate your offerings into people's everyday lives. If someone can’t afford a product, offer options like Buy Now, Pay Later. If they’re unhappy with their hair color, provide a 60-second root touch-up spray.
Instead of attempting to change people, enhance the lives they already lead. If you host a podcast, target those who enjoy audio content rather than trying to convert book enthusiasts.
Section 1.4: The Value of Effort in Marketing
Many marketers promote easy solutions, equating simplicity with sales. However, this can lead to a crowded marketplace filled with superficiality. Ikea exemplifies success by making customers excited about the effort involved in assembling their products.
In both physical stores and online, they showcase finished items but deliver them as assembly projects. Consumers find joy in the unboxing experience and learning through instructional videos, often feeling proud to tackle the assembly themselves.
Instead of depicting people jumping with excitement, illustrate characters who are eager to contribute to the process.
