Navigating the Challenges of AI Writing: Embracing Authenticity

Written on

Chapter 1: The Rise of AI and Its Impact on Writing

In today's digital landscape, I've taken a firm stance against content generated by artificial intelligence. Whenever I encounter it in an article, I tend to halt my reading and, on a particularly frustrating day, might even unfollow the author.

Identifying AI-generated material can be challenging, but there are usually telltale signs. The writing often has a bland, uniform quality, repetitive phrasing, and may even fall into the trap of American English spellings. The absence of typographical errors, the dreaded numbered list format, and a tidy conclusion often signal a lack of genuine creativity. If an author is particularly careless, they might even leave behind a "regenerate response" note at the end of their piece—it's hard to believe, but it happens!

Sean Kernan has written an insightful piece on identifying signs of AI influence, which is worth a read.

Of course, it’s frustrating to think we might need to alter our writing styles to avoid sounding robotic. This means that some of us may have to adopt a more personal tone, which can feel overly simplistic or juvenile.

Typos: A Necessary Evil

An alternative approach is to deliberately include a few typos. Regular readers of mine are likely accustomed to this quirk, so it won’t feel out of place.

Incorporating Randomness: A Nod to Tourettes

Adding random words for a unique writing style

AI systems primarily function by predicting the next most probable word, often drawing from a vast pool of internet content. One way to combat this is to introduce unexpected and quirky words. Without meaning to offend anyone with Tourettes, this could result in an article where terms like "aardvark" or "zebra" appear out of nowhere—adding an extra layer of absurdity that might frustrate tools like Grammarly.

As a relatively new user of Grammarly, I find it less than appealing. Much like AI-generated writing, it often results in a bland and soupy text. While some may enjoy that style, it’s not for me!

The conversation around AI isn't going away anytime soon, and I'm hopeful that Medium will provide clearer guidelines at the upcoming "Medium Day" event in August.
