Navigating Loss and Growth: My Q2 Reflection
Written on
Quarterly Reflections: An Introduction
At the end of March 2023, I initiated a practice called the Quarter’s Review. This reflective period allows for an evaluation of the past quarter, recognizing achievements, identifying areas for growth, and fostering accountability while sharing openly with others. I highly recommend giving it a try!
Chapter 1: Lessons from Q1
As spring unfolded here in Turin, Italy, where I have been residing since February, I found myself contemplating the conclusion of Q1. It ended with significant personal realizations: the necessity of connecting with like-minded individuals, the importance of seizing the present rather than deferring dreams to an uncertain future, and the eagerness to test the minimum viable version of my aspirations.
Exciting plans were on the horizon, including a fresh plane ticket, which made me feel as though I was beginning anew. However, early in Q2, life threw a curveball, challenging me in unprecedented ways.
Dealing with Grief
As indicated in the title, my family and I faced the unexpected loss of a beloved individual during Q2, leading us into a profound state of grief. Anyone who has navigated similar situations can relate to the disorienting nature of such experiences.
In my case, this meant traveling to another country, establishing temporary arrangements, managing work obligations, and delicately communicating the news to others. The emotional upheaval was immense, especially as I sought to support my sister, who was most affected by this loss. I felt utterly devastated.
In the aftermath, contemplating future events, such as summer gatherings and holidays, became overwhelming. This marked my first encounter with an unforeseen death, one that felt particularly unjust due to its suddenness and apparent senselessness.
Consequently, I chose to forgo a planned month-long solo workation in Bali, Indonesia, as mentioned in my Q1 review. This decision was not difficult since my priorities were crystal clear. My view of the nomadic lifestyle is not about rushing to accumulate experiences but rather about savoring each moment.
Living in the Present
As I previously mentioned, the thought of the future was too painful to entertain, as it required acknowledging that this cherished person was no longer part of my life. Instead, I focused on living in the moment. This approach translated into a series of healthy daily habits rooted in my daily life.
In hindsight, and perhaps influenced by my background in psychology, I recognized this strategy as a way to mitigate risks: indulging in negative behaviors would only exacerbate my emotional and physical state.
Thus, my routine consisted of work, hitting the gym three times a week, eating nutritious foods, prioritizing restful sleep, and gradually returning to my writing practice, which had understandably been paused amid the turmoil.
Notably, in my Q1 Review, I had outlined a routine with specific commitments, such as posting at least one article weekly (non-negotiable) and attending the gym three times a week (flexible). Remarkably, my Q2 actions aligned closely with those plans, despite the disruption.
Rising from the Ashes
One never fully recovers from loss. Grief arrives in waves, and one must learn to embrace it as an inherent aspect of life while moving forward, though its intensity may lessen over time. With this principle in mind, I prioritized my health and well-being—there were nights when I slept for nine to ten hours!
As I began to engage in positive behaviors, I noticed flickers of renewed motivation and hope. For instance:
- My commitment to posting articles increased from one to two per week.
- I intensified my dedication to healthy eating, focusing on whole foods.
- I ensured regular physical activity through gym sessions, yoga, cycling, and walking.

Conclusions: Embracing the Journey
The experience of loss and grief is an enduring one. However, throughout this journey, I've reaffirmed that prioritizing my health and well-being—through ample sleep, wholesome nutrition, and movement—is crucial for gradually reclaiming a sense of normalcy. Moreover, after the initial setback, maintaining focus on my goals has provided me with a beacon of hope.
