Twitter's Decline: A Reflection on Its Troubled Journey

Chapter 1: My Journey with Twitter
I first joined Twitter in 2015, when it was already a vibrant hub for conversation. As a millennial emerging into the world of social media, I believed it would enhance my scientific career and allow me to connect with a broader audience through my blog. It felt like a natural fit—an exciting way to engage with others while potentially reaching new followers.
Over time, I found myself spending an excessive amount of time on the platform. It became clear that Twitter was more than just a networking tool; it was genuinely entertaining.

Section 1.1: The Dual Nature of Twitter
Of course, Twitter was also a source of significant stress and harassment. I faced everything from death threats to targeted campaigns of abuse. The platform struggled to manage the presence of harmful content, and their responses often felt dismissive.
Yet, for much of my time on Twitter, it offered a delightful experience. It was a space to engage in debates with strangers, share research on diverse topics—from vaping to vitamin C—and connect with academics I would never encounter in real life. Whenever I had questions, Twitter was often my first stop, as I could easily reach out to experts, such as those knowledgeable about canine infectious diseases.
Section 1.2: The Changing Landscape
Unfortunately, since Elon Musk's acquisition, the platform has taken a downward turn. Hate speech has increased, while valuable content has diminished. Most tweets I encounter, including my own, lament the site's decline. Recently, Twitter has restricted links to other social media platforms, leading me to doubt my continued presence there.
We all recognized that Twitter would eventually face challenges—after all, social media platforms come and go. The list of those that have faded away, such as MySpace and Vine, is extensive, and even Facebook is struggling to keep its audience engaged. Change is the only constant, yet Twitter seems to be stifled by its current trajectory.
Chapter 2: The Signs of a Forced Decline
In the video "Is Twitter Actually Dying," the discussion revolves around the platform's struggles and potential future.
I fear that Twitter is not merely fading into obscurity; it feels as though it is being stifled by a tech billionaire prioritizing profit over community engagement. Instead of a gradual transition to newer platforms, we face the unsettling possibility of losing touch with friends and creators in a hurry.
Prominent figures, including Elton John and Hank Green, have either deleted their accounts or distanced themselves from the site. Among the scientists, healthcare professionals, and journalists I follow, about 10% have opted to protect or delete their accounts, or have ceased tweeting altogether. European politicians have also highlighted that Twitter's new policies may conflict with EU regulations, complicating the situation further.
I realize that if I had encountered Twitter today, with its present issues, I likely wouldn't have signed up. The platform's current state, coupled with the owner’s apparent favoritism toward extreme right-wing accounts, would have driven me away.
Despite its flaws, Twitter has played a vital role in my professional journey; my blog might remain relatively obscure without it, and half of my academic collaborations originated there. However, it seems the new leadership prioritizes tolerating harmful voices over fostering a creative and safe environment for its users. This, to me, signals a grim outlook for the platform.
Maybe Musk will reconsider some of the controversial policies; however, the reality remains that his decisions can change unpredictably based on skewed Twitter polls.
Still, there's a glimmer of hope—perhaps the platform could recover and thrive again. But as I see it, the Twitter I once cherished is fading away, and that thought brings me sorrow.
