Understanding the Intersection of Science and Political Beliefs

Chapter 1: The Origins of Political Identity
At some point in life, it is essential to pause and reflect on the origins of our political beliefs. This is often more challenging than it seems, as it requires a significant degree of self-awareness, which takes both time and effort. Yet, this introspection is crucial.
An intriguing aspect of this journey is that one doesn't necessarily have to alter their views on significant issues; instead, understanding the motivations behind those views can be enlightening. Many adopt political positions due to influences from family, friends, or educational experiences. However, a deep dive into one’s own values may reveal that their initial beliefs were, in fact, correct.
This was my experience two years ago when I chose to step back from the political scene until I could confidently articulate my beliefs and the reasons behind them. I recognized my left-leaning tendencies in the U.S. political landscape, particularly my support for universal healthcare and a basic income for all. Yet, I sought a clearer understanding of why these issues resonated so strongly with me.
Ultimately, my identity as a scientist played a pivotal role in shaping my political viewpoint. As a scientist, I acknowledge fundamental biological truths: human beings require consistent access to food, water, and shelter. Denial of these essentials for any prolonged duration results in dire consequences, including death. These are indisputable facts that cannot be overlooked.
Considering this perspective, it becomes evident to me that every individual deserves access to these basic necessities, irrespective of their financial situation. Poverty should not equate to a death sentence; however, it often does without adequate support systems for our society's most vulnerable populations. Thus, there are essentially two paths forward: either ensure that food, water, and shelter are free, or provide sufficient financial resources to enable individuals to afford these essentials, even in the absence of employment.
This conversation can further extend to healthcare. Numerous individuals face health conditions that can become fatal without regular access to medical care. To require these individuals to earn substantial incomes merely to meet their healthcare expenses is, to me, an abhorrent situation. Throughout my career, I’ve encountered veterans who are forced to make the heart-wrenching choice between purchasing food or seeking medical treatment for debilitating ailments.
Let me stress this again: they are forced to choose between food and healthcare. In the U.S., access to both is not guaranteed. How can anyone expect to thrive in such circumstances?
I encourage everyone to reflect on their values and consider the type of society they wish to inhabit. Then, evaluate whether your political views align with those values. While this is no easy undertaking, I have found it to be one of the most fulfilling endeavors I've engaged in over the past five years, and I believe you will too.
