# Why Your "Validated" Startup Might Still Be on the Brink of Failure
Written on
Diagnosing Startup Struggles
You've played by the rules. You validated your SaaS concept with feedback from over 50 Product Managers, developed the product, and launched it full of optimism. Yet, instead of an influx of enthusiastic users, you’re faced with… complete silence. Does this resonate with you? Let’s dive in and explore the root causes behind your startup’s challenges.
The Case Study: A User Interview SaaS Tool
Today, we focus on a SaaS tool intended for user interviews. The founder shared their experience on Reddit, expressing their frustration. Their website boasts:
"User interviews made straightforward. Conduct interviews continuously, prioritize opportunities, and test solutions all in one platform, so you can make informed product decisions effortlessly."
However, the reality? A complete lack of traction, high user churn, and users disappearing without a trace. Ouch.
The Diagnostic Approach
When a startup struggles to gain momentum, multiple factors must be considered. Let’s dissect this situation:
- Market Interest
- Competitive Landscape
- Market Awareness
- Messaging and User Experience
#### 1. Evaluating Market Interest
Let’s start by analyzing Google keyword volumes:
- "conduct user interview" — <1000 searches/month
- "How to conduct user interview" — <1000 searches/month
- "customer interview" — 4.4K searches/month
- "tools for customer interview" — 100 searches/month
Interestingly, "customer interview" seems to be the favored term. That’s our first hint!
#### 2. Analyzing the Competition
When searching for "tools for customer interview," we find:
- No direct ads (hello, opportunity!)
- Numerous blog posts discussing tools
- Competitors enjoying significant web traffic (100K and 20K views)
Diagnosis: Competitors are present, but they’re engaging in a different SEO strategy.
#### 3. Assessing Market Awareness
Checking the website traffic yields a flatline—zero visitors. Clearly, there’s a problem here.
#### 4. Evaluating Messaging and User Experience
The website’s initial copy is decent, but as one scrolls down, it becomes convoluted. The "How It Works" section requires significant cognitive effort to comprehend, which shouldn’t be necessary. Your audience should be able to grasp the concept effortlessly and make informed decisions quickly.
I also tested the app for 60 seconds (the approximate time a prospect will spend before deciding) and found the navigation confusing—though that might be partly my fault for skipping the tutorial.
In summary, there is market interest and viable competitors, yet the founder isn’t capturing their share. The landing page fails to convey the necessary narrative to prospective customers, and the crucial 60-second rule is ignored—meaning a visitor should grasp your purpose and identify at least one functionality within that timeframe.
Formulating a Treatment Plan
- Traffic Enhancement Strategy:
- Conduct competitor analysis to identify ranking keywords.
- Develop content surrounding "How to conduct customer interviews" to improve ranking.
- Quick win: Launch ads targeting "How to conduct customer interviews" (an untapped opportunity!).
- User Engagement Initiative:
- Reconnect with those initial 50 interested parties for feedback.
- Reach out via LinkedIn DMs to product managers.
- Explore Product Hunt for newly launched startups that could benefit from your tool.
- Messaging Revamp:
- Change "User interviews" to "Customer interviews."
- Simplify benefit language.
- Incorporate visual elements (screenshots or clips of the tool).
- Utilize Your Own Tool: Actively use your tool to interview users—be your own best case study!
Key Insights
Validation Doesn’t Equal Success
Receiving positive feedback from 50 individuals doesn't guarantee they’ll use (or pay for) your product. For further reading, check out "The Mom Test" or this article — How to Nail Customer Conversations.
SEO is Crucial
Ensure you use the terminology that potential customers are actually searching for.
No Traffic = No Feedback
Without visitors, diagnosing additional issues becomes impossible.
Clarity is Paramount
Your messaging needs to be clear not only at the top of your site but throughout your entire platform.
Be Your Own User
If you’re not regularly using your own product, how can you expect others to do so?
Every successful startup has faced challenges. The key is to identify issues early, apply effective solutions, and continually iterate. Your SaaS isn’t beyond saving—it may just need a little startup CPR!
