Is It Justifiable to Prohibit LLMs in Educational Settings?

Chapter 1: The Calculator Dilemma
Throughout my education, I never once had a calculator in school. While this may sound like a humble brag, it’s a reflection of a strict rule: calculators were forbidden during exams. If a student was caught with one, they were treated as if they had committed a serious offense.
You might wonder why this is relevant today. After all, calculators have become commonplace. However, I argue that the dilemma surrounding calculators persists, but now it’s manifested in the form of Large Language Models (LLMs).
Let’s delve into this issue further.
Section 1.1: The Impact of Banning Calculators
Honestly, I believe banning calculators was not beneficial. My classmates and I often resorted to writing out mathematical problems by hand, applying manual algorithms to arrive at answers. Looking back, I rarely use that skill anymore—perhaps once in the last five years.
In contrast, I frequently rely on mental math in everyday situations. The prohibition of calculators didn’t enhance this ability; rather, I preferred to jot down calculations, as did many of my peers. My mental math skills improved only after I let go of outdated practices learned in school and embraced more effective techniques.
Had I been allowed access to calculators earlier, my progress might have accelerated. I’ve always had a fascination with technology, enjoying exploring devices to understand their capabilities.
Subsection 1.1.1: Advanced Calculators and Their Uses
The term “calculator” encompasses various devices. The first time I could use a calculator was in university, where I encountered advanced models like the Casio FX/MX series. These calculators could perform complex operations such as solving algebraic equations and handling matrix calculations.
Some might argue that providing young students with such powerful tools could impede their understanding of fundamental concepts. While this concern is valid, I contend that these calculators can actually assist learning. A student must grasp basic principles, like limits, to effectively use such devices.
What if a student chooses to utilize a calculator for homework? Children often seek shortcuts—an inclination that should be nurtured, not stifled. If a student discovers an efficient method to solve a problem, it suggests the problem itself needs revisiting.
Today, I employ sophisticated mathematical models regularly, utilizing programming libraries as my "calculator." The quest for efficient solutions is a core aspect of my work, not something to be avoided.
Section 1.2: The Relevance of LLMs in Education
The arguments I made regarding calculators apply equally to LLMs, which can be considered multi-dimensional calculators. LLMs extend beyond math, helping students tackle various subjects.

However, LLMs present unique challenges, as they can yield incorrect or misleading results. Despite these issues, history suggests that banning technology from educational environments is not the solution.
We must recognize that these technologies are integral to our future. If changes are necessary, it is the educational curriculum and teaching methods that need to evolve.
Chapter 2: Concerns About Diminished Learning
Could banning LLMs lead to students becoming less capable? Not necessarily. I recall my father effortlessly navigating our city, while I relied on GPS technology for directions. If we were tested on our ability to find the quickest route without tools, I might indeed seem less competent.
However, because I don’t need to memorize routes, I can focus my attention on planning other essential tasks. This is the essence of technological advancement—it simplifies complex processes, allowing us to utilize our time and energy on more significant matters.
Banning LLMs or calculators is unlikely to make students less intelligent. We should approach technology with optimism rather than fear.
